SAN ANTONIO — Police are working to determine whether a woman who died Tuesday afternoon after being shot in a North Side apartment complex fired the bullet herself or was killed by someone else.
Officers were called to an apartment in the 8700 block of Datapoint Drive around 4:15 p.m. after receiving reports that several shots had been fired in the area.
When police arrived, they found a woman with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Police detained a man inside and separated him from the woman.
The suspect, identified by police as Shaquille Lawdins, 21, told officers that the woman had been playing with a gun when she accidentally shot herself, police said. However, the victim gave police a different story of what happened.
SAPD would not say what the woman told them, but did say that immediately after the incident, a detective told the suspect that a gunshot residue test would be performed on him.
Lawdins then told police that he had fired the weapon that day, but that he and the woman were just discharging the firearm inside the apartment, according to police.
He continued to say that when the victim took the weapon, she did not know it was load and consequently shot herself.
The suspect was taken into custody for questioning and has been cooperative, police said.
The woman, who has not yet been identified, died while in surgery.
Officers are still actively investigating the incident.
